Whether creating handmade stoneware, white porcelain or Japanese raku pottery, I approach each pieces as a distinct and individual character.
In 2017 I opened my Sarasota studio, returning to art after a career in New York City directing communications at NGOs, government and the United Nations promoting women's human rights and empowerment.

Joan Libby Hawk Ceramics and Jana Millstone Paintings -- together we created a unique collaborative exhibit that celebrates color, light and form. "We welcomed working together in a kind of jazz duet riffing off the play of light, negative space, transparent color." The installation provides a natural context that echoes how people actually live with multiple forms of art.
I've recently connected to painting, thriving in its contrast to handmade ceramics and the dialog that results. My approach in contemporary paintings, like my contemporary pottery, ranges widely, driven by inquiry and discovery. A definitive place may become an organized energy of color and brushwork and a non-existent state may be rendered with utmost clarity.
Informal spot for parking work in process, ideas and collaborations.
Good place to start is Color & Clay -- A Duet an exhibit that turned virtual because of you know what (please stay safe...). Envisioned as an integrated, collaborative experience of paintings and ceramics that riffed off each other, visually darting and weaving. Now virtual, Jana and I continued to pursue and produce a series of images and story.
